Eye Doctor and Choo-choo Museum

James got to make a return visit to Dr. Satterfield (the pediatric eye doctor) today for a little follow-up appointment.  After our visit last year, she suggested that all of our children have their eyes checked at 2 years because of Josh's vision problems.  She mentioned today that the chances of amblyopia (the thing Josh has) is 4% in the general population and 10-20% for our children because of the genetic component.  Still a small chance but worth checking early so it can be addressed early if need be.  Anyway, James was an angel at the appointment today!!!  The doctor came in and asked if James wanted to sit on Mommy or Daddy's lap in the chair, James replied, "I do myself."  So I started to help him climb into the chair and he proceeded to tell me, "Don't touch me, I do myself."  Well then!!!!  He did a great job of following all of the doctor's tests and after each one continued to say, "Daddy's turn!"  Daddy only got a turn on one test... and didn't do so well!  Dr. Satterfield showed James a small card with lots of black and white dots and three images in the dots.  She asked him to point out the star, cat, and car which he was able to do successfully.  She then handed the card to me and I saw all three images.  I passed the card on to Josh who said, "You can see things on here!"  It was darling!  The doctor turned around and said, "You have amblyopia.  You can't see things on it."  Josh now tells me that he could see that there was something there but wouldn't have been able to detect what the images were.  I just think it's cute that James was able to pass a test that his Daddy couldn't!  Anyway, the final result was very good!  The doctor said that James's eyes are 1/2 di-oide (I can't remember exactly) off which is normal variation for this age but, because of Josh's eyes, she wants to see him back at the age of 4.  At first I was a little nervous about this but she said that she is only being over-vigilant because of Josh. This works out perfectly for us because we will be able to take James in for his 4-year-old check up at the same time that Jack will get his 2-year-old check up.  All this eye doctor stuff and these eye tests are so interesting to me since I have never had to have my eyes checked!  Thankfully it's all coming out smoothly for James at this point!

James was such a great little guy at the eye doctor that I wanted to do something special for him afterwards.  Since we were already in Sacramento and it was raining (so the park was out of the question), we decided to head off to the Train Museum in Old Sacramento which we have a yearly pass for.  James had a great time playing with Thomas and friends and didn't do much investigating of the big trains this time.  All in all, we had a great morning which was proven with James's 3 1/2 hour nap this afternoon!!!

I think that's about all for now!  Hope everyone is doing well and we send out best to everyone!
